The Ground Search And Rescue (GSAR) course is designed to provide the key principles of GSAR. The training will introduce theories of GSAR operations and focus on human behaviour. This course will also introduce the use of GPS, map reading, compasses and signposts. Additionally, we will teach the basic principles of searching ground and introduce some fundamentals of tracking to greatly reduce the burden on search teams and decrease the area that resources will be required to search. The result is the introduction of some key globally recognized Search and Rescue (SAR) tactics to searchers in Northern Canada, building on their already intimate knowledge of their land and people. Ultimately, we see success through lives saved and safer communities in the north.
Upon completion of the training, students will be able to make assessments on human behaviours, indicate likely search areas, and conduct ground searches utilizing tracking techniques to confirm the presence of evidence indicating the lost or stranded. Using these skills allows small GSAR teams with finite resources to focus their resources in the most effective way, enabling the rescue of the casualties when time is vital to save life and limb.
