Wilderness First Aid - Tundra Course

The Wilderness First Aid - Tundra course is designed as a foundation for First Aid response in a tundra or sparsely populated area. The training will introduce basic life saving techniques as well as focus on the medical evacuation of an injured person or persons. This course will also introduce MARCH (Massive Hemorrhage, Airway, Respiration, Circulation, and Head Injury/Hypothermia) principles used by first responders and military personnel around the world. Additionally, we will cover the basic principles of the Good Samaritan Law to ensure that participants understand the legal issues that may arise in a medical scenario.

Students will be introduced to basic lifesaving techniques and procedures which can be utilized by personnel in Northern Canada, bringing a higher level of care to those who are injured. These tools can be used both in the vicinity of the towns and hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest Medicenter. Ultimately, you will see success in lives saved and safer communities in the north.

Upon completion of the training, students will be able to assess the medical status of persons who are in need and provide them with care until higher medical practitioners are available. Students will also assess rescue timelines and be informed on how to use GPS to confirm positioning and establish communications with other elements. Using these skills, a qualified person will be able to treat and prolong the survivability of injured persons while treating the most severe injuries first and preventing smaller injuries from developing into life-threatening ones.
